first_imgMONTEBELLO – The city allows garage sales in residential areas four times per year. One is scheduled between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sept. 7-9. Permits are not required, but there are regulations for those conducting garage sales. Along with holding a sale between the stated hours, all items for sale or used as part of the event must be kept on private property and not invade into neighboring properties or the public right-of-way. No more than one sign may be displayed on the premises for the purpose of advertising the sale. Placement of signs on public property is prohibited. The next garage sale is scheduled for Dec. 7-9. No trash service on Labor Day SANTA FE SPRINGS – The city reminds its residents there will be no trash collection Monday due to the observance of Labor Day. Trash collection will be conducted one day late the entire week, with Friday service on Saturday. For more information, call your local waste hauler. DUI checkpoint set for Friday night WHITTIER – Whittier police will be keeping an eye out for drunken drivers and anyone driving without a license or a suspended license Friday. The department will conduct a DUI checkpoint in the area of Telegraph Road and Bloomfield Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday. Officers will also be checking for unlicensed motorists or those who are driving with a suspended driver license. Anyone found driving with an invalid license may have their vehicle impounded for 30 days and be issued a citation. The checkpoint and other enforcement efforts are part of the Police Department’s efforts that coincides with the national “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” campaign and California’s “Report Drunk Driving – Call 911” public message. The program is paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For more information, call Sgt. Dan Lowe at (562)945-8256 City Council meeting canceled WHITTIER – The City Council’s regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. today has been canceled. The cancellation is because of a lack of a quorum, meaning not enough council members can attend the meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 11, when the council is expected to consider plans to redevelop the former Alpha Beta site at the southeast corner of Hadley Street and Comstock Avenue. Preschool program accepting children SANTA FE SPRINGS – The State Preschool Program is now accepting applications for its program available from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday beginning in September. The program is designed to provide early learning experiences for children 31/2 to 5 years old. Priority is given to families who live or work in Santa Fe Springs and meet low-income requirements. There is no charge for families who qualify. Enrollment is limited. Call (944) 641-9669 to place your child on the waiting list. Film screening to promote literacy WHITTIER – A fundraiser for the literacy program at Vail High School in Montebello will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at Whittier Village Cinemas, 7038 Greenleaf Ave., with a screening of the movie “Hairspray.” Tickets are $25 per person, and include soda and a bag of popcorn. Anyone wearing ’50s or ’60s clothing will also receive a special gift.
