[Representational image]Creative CommonsIt was expected that Budget 2018 would offer some salve to the salaried class which has always been the favourite target of finance ministers looking to shore up revenues to keep the bloated government machinery running.Union Budget 2018 highlights: FM throws cold water on hopes of individual taxpayersThere were high expectations that the budget would propose to increase the personal tax exemption limits and raise the current basic tax slabs. But Budget 2018 disappointed the salaried class with no changes offered in tax slabs.A person whose total income exceeds the tax exemption limit set by the government has to pay income tax. This has to be paid based on prevailing rates. Currently, people earning up to Rs 2.5 lakh per annum are exempted from income tax. There was speculation that the finance minister will increase the current basic income tax slabs to Rs 3 lakh. But he disappointed by going by the current rates. Current income tax slabsHere are major announcements related to personal tax from Union Budget 2018: The government has made many positive changes in personal income tax rates in the past year so no changes will be there in personal tax rates and tax slabs in Budget 2018.For all of the employees, the government would continue to make 12% contribution towards the Employee provident fund account for three years’ time.Women contribution to EPF reduced to 8% for first 3 years without affecting employer’s contribution.Seventy lakh formal jobs have been created this year. Government to contribute 12% of EPF contribution for new employees in all sectors. In a relief for salaried taxpayers, Arun Jaitley announced standard deduction of Rs 40,000 under the heads of transport and medical reimbursement. The facility is extended to pensioners as well. The education cess on personal income tax will be raised to 4 percent from the present 3 percent.”The salaried class was looking forward to either a realignment of tax slabs or significant benefit in the form of standard deduction. Though the standard deduction of Rs 40,000 looks attractive the benefit is significantly diluted since medical reimbursement of Rs 15,000 and transport allowance of 19,200 have been removed. The increase of cess on the tax to 4% from current levels of 3% also eats into the savings”, Saraswathi Kasturirangan Partner of Deloitte, told International Business Times India.
“Humans tend to try to establish a rank hierarchy. When you’re in high school, it’s a very limited arena in which you can establish your rank, and climbing the social ladder to be on top is one of the main ways… Bullying is a tool you can use to get there,” lead researcher Jennifer Wong, a professor of criminology, was quoted as saying by National Post.Researchers at Simon Fraser University surveyed a group of Vancouver high school students and got the results which oppose earlier assumptions about bullies. A standard questionnaire — asking things like how often they were “hit, kicked or shoved” — divided the students into the categories of
Kolkata: Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has proposed to set up concrete roads in New Town in phases. This will reduce the maintenance cost of the stretches which eats up a major portion of the revenue collection. The potholes and crators that have been created due to the monsoon in areas under Sector V and Nabadiganta will be repaired before the Durga Puja. A workshop to find out methods to set up roads for longer duration was held in New Town on Thursday. Senior officials of HIDCO, New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) attended the workshop along with engineers and experts in road construction. There are 200km roads in New Town while Sector V has another 25 kilometers road. This would help the cars to move smoothly and reduce the level of environmental pollution as well. The experts suggested that for the good health of the roads, the cracks that are more than 3 mm deep should be repaired immediately. Representatives of a start-up company said they would provide vehicles fitted with CCTV cameras which will help them to detect the cracks. The specially-designed vehicles will move around in New Town. There will a central monitoring system. Once the cracks are detected, the road repairing agencies will be informed through the monitoring system. HIDCO will ask the firm to do a pilot study and on the basis of the report, subsequent steps will be taken. Saplings were given to NGOs and individual owners and cooperatives looking after housing complexes during the Forest Week. The roadside trees are being watered daily with recycled water with the help of specially designed vehicles.
Register Now » Susan Bennett, 68, has an iconic voice, but most people don’t know her name.In an interview with Typeform, Bennett shared the story of how she became the first voice of Siri — and how she handled the news when she found out.You should check out the full interview, which includes audio clips and a timeline of human-computer interaction, but below are 10 interesting highlights.1. A different kind of vocal performance.Bennett started her career in music. She was a back-up vocalist for Burt Bacharach and Roy Orbison in the 1960s and ‘70s, and she sang TV and radio ad jingles. Today, she and her husband are in a band and perform together.2. Building trust in machines. In the mid-’70s, when ATMs first appeared, people did not feel secure withdrawing money from a machine. They were used to human bank tellers. So an advertising firm called McDonald & Little hired Bennett to give ATMs a persona called Tillie, voiced by Bennett.Related: How Siri Saved a Man’s Life3. For checking, press 1.In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Bennett voiced GPS and automated phone systems. If you checked your bank balance or made flight reservations over the phone back then, you may have heard her voice.4. A month of gobbledygook. In 2005, she landed a gig voicing nonsense phrases for a company called ScanSoft — strings of words and sounds such as “Malitia oi hallucinate, buckry ockra ooze.” The company was working on a text-to-speech service, but Bennett said she thought she was recording scripts for phone systems. She did this for a month, then declined a five-year contract with the client. Meanwhile, ScanSoft merged with Nuance Communications, which later partnered with Apple.5. Interim success.Between 2005 and 2011, Bennett worked with clients such as Coca-Cola, IBM, Ford and Delta Airlines.6. The surprise of her life. She didn’t know she was the voice of Siri until after the feature was added to iPhone 4S devices on Oct. 4, 2011. Engineers were able to take the gibberish phrases she recorded, cut them up and form them into the entire English language. Still, Bennett kept her identity hidden for two years, until a video by The Verge got people wondering.7. Where credit is due.Because Bennett never recorded the actual phrases that Siri delivers today, she’s not responsible for any of the sassy responses the voice assistant is famous for. “It all has to do with the programmers,” Bennett told Typeform.8. The Her effect.Bennett has received thousands of phone calls and emails from people who say they’ve formed an emotional relationship with Siri. In creating Siri’s personality, engineers worked to make her sound more human than previous robotic-sounding voice interfaces, programmed sassy comebacks and avoided making her too persistently helpful to the point of annoying users.Related: How Important Is Siri’s Personality?9. Sidestepped.Apple not only never admitted that Bennett was the voice behind Siri, but it also never paid her beyond the hourly wage she received from ScanSoft in 2005.10. Fame without responsibility. The iOS 7 software and all subsequent iOS systems do not feature Bennett’s voice. “I kind of got the best of both worlds because I was the original, and I do get to promote myself,” she told Typeform. “When Siri starts leading us all into the sea it won’t be my voice.” 3 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
